World Cup 2026: Frederick Asare backs Ghana to make strong impression

Former Asante Kotoko captain and Durban City goalkeeper Frederick Asare has thrown his full support behind the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the team is capable of making a strong impression despite external doubts.

Speaking on Akoma FM, the Ghana international rejected claims that the current squad is weaker than previous generations, arguing that the team still has enough quality to compete at the highest level.

"This isn't a weaker Black Stars team, as many see it. I believe in the team and their capabilities to do well," Asare said.

Asare stressed that Ghana’s opening Group L match against Panama will be crucial to shaping their tournament journey, urging the players to begin with maximum focus and determination.

"We only need to start on a strong note, especially in our opening game against Panama. A win in that game will boost the confidence of the playing body," he explained.

"They should just remain focused and very determined, and I'm pretty sure we will go far in this competition."

The former Black Stars goalkeeper, who featured during the World Cup qualifiers, called on Ghanaians to rally behind the team as they prepare for their fifth appearance at the global showpiece.

While acknowledging the difficulty of winning the tournament, Asare refused to dismiss Ghana's chances entirely.

"It's very difficult achieving that feat now, but in football you never say never. So it's possible we can win it. Ghanaians just have to believe in the team and have strong faith. Things will go well."

Ghana open their Group L campaign against Panama on Wednesday, June 17, in Toronto. The Black Stars will then face England (June 23 in Boston) and Croatia (June 27 in Philadelphia). Having reached the quarter-finals in 2010 â€“ their best ever finish â€“ Ghana will hope to surpass that achievement in North America.
