Tema Port Adopts RAM Revolver System for Bulk Shea Nut Exports

Logistics company Honeyworld has begun loading bulk shea nut exports at the Port of Tema using a container-based system that moves cargo from warehouse to ship without placing it on the quay apron, in partnership with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).

The RAM Revolver Containerized Bulk Handling (CBH) System enables what the parties call shed-to-ship or pit-to-ship loading, in which dry bulk cargo travels from its storage point directly into a vessel’s hatch.

Under the traditional method, shea nuts arriving at Tema are discharged onto the quay apron and later loaded into the vessel with grabs. This involves additional handling and carries a risk of spillage into the sea.

How the new system works

Specialised 20-foot Revolver Containers are delivered to the exporter’s warehouse, where they are loaded and sealed before being transported to the quayside.

A RAM Revolver unit mounted on a crane grips and lifts each container, opens its lid, and rotates it 360 degrees to pour the contents into the vessel’s hatch. The empty container is then returned to the warehouse for reuse.

Because the cargo stays enclosed until it is discharged, loose shea nuts are not dumped on the quay apron before loading.

GPHA has been looking for more efficient and environmentally responsible ways to handle bulk cargo, and engaged private-sector operators to explore alternatives to traditional bulk handling. That process led to the arrangement with Honeyworld.

The Director of Port, Tema, Mr Tabon Zuma, said the new method marked a change from the old way of handling the commodity.

“Today, we have succeeded in changing the traditional form into the modern way of handling shea nuts,” he said.

Mr Zuma said the dirty cargo charge that applies to traditional bulk handling does not apply under the new system, since the shea nuts go straight into the vessel. He added that the sealed containers make it more difficult to divert cargo.

Honeyworld says the export service is backed by its warehousing and road freight operations, as well as an equipment fleet that includes reach stackers, payloaders, forklifts, and a conveyor belt with weighing capability.
