The National Identification Authority (NIA) has arrested six staff members and terminated the appointments of seven others over alleged extortion during the Free Ghana Card registration exercise for children at Galaka in the Upper East Region.

In a press release dated Thursday, October 29, 2026, the Authority said the six staff members were arrested by the Bawku West District Police after parents accused them of demanding money before registering their children.

The suspects are assisting the police with investigations.

The NIA said an internal review also found that seven other members of the registration team were aware of the alleged misconduct but failed to report it, leading to the termination of their appointments.

The alleged extortion occurred during the recently concluded registration exercise for children aged six to 14 at the Galaka registration centre.

The Authority reiterated that Ghana Card registration must follow approved procedures and that staff are not authorised to demand unauthorised payments from applicants or their parents.

It said it would continue to take disciplinary action against misconduct to protect the integrity of the registration process and ensure the public receives fair and professional service.

The NIA has urged members of the public to report suspected misconduct through its official channels.
